When I first started learning about meditation, I was told to go to a place where I would find myself in a room. These people would sit in a chair and they would have a box of things on a table with a chair to sit in. Every time I sat in the chair, I would remember what they said.
Well, when it comes to the meditative state, I can’t think of anything that I’ve needed to remember in the last 12 years that comes up in a meditation class more than the “go to a place where I feel stuck.” The fact is that even the most simple meditation practice can’t help you solve the problem of how to remain in a state of self-awareness.
How many people are stuck in the state of self-awareness? I am not counting the ones who are stuck in the state of self-awareness after the last week of the last exam. I am counting the ones who are stuck in the state of self-awareness when they are stuck in the state of self-awareness.
In meditation, you are trying to bring your mind back to a place of peace and enlightenment. When you can’t do this, you have only two choices, either to stay stuck in self-awareness or to learn to be self-aware. When you can’t do this, you either get stuck in the self-awareness state or stay stuck in the self-awareness state.
It turns out that even though I’ve been working on this for a while, I still don’t get it. I’m in the self-awareness state, so who cares how many shoes I’m wearing, I don’t have to change them. I’m a freakin’ zombie.
Well, I have to admit that that last statement is a little bit of a stretch. For me, I think I’ve been stuck in the self-awareness state for quite a bit. I’ve been in it for a long, long time. Maybe the self-awareness state has become so accustomed to my own habits that I can’t get out of it.
There are a few reasons why a person might start to develop the self-awareness state. For one, you start to notice patterns in your thinking and it becomes hard to not think about it. For another, there are some situations where you think “I should do x, but I just can’t”. And finally, some people might be stuck in a loop where they can’t shake themselves out of the self-awareness state.
Now, I have no idea if this is a good state or a bad state for the self-awareness, but I can tell you that I have been in this loop for a few weeks now. In this loop I will be in a few states where I am the type of person who just wont shake themselves out of a loop. It’s actually kind of fascinating. For example, I’ve realized that I am the type of person who has a tendency to pick up things and put them down.
This is a little bit of a mind foggie, but I recently realized that all I care about is getting out of this loop. I really don’t care about anything else.
This is why it’s so important to recognize your own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions. As we’ve discussed in previous blogs, in our own lives we tend to think of doing things in a certain way. For example, you may think that going to a new restaurant every time you come home is the way to go because you have a strict routine that includes getting up at the same time every day, going through the same motions, and returning to the same exact place.
